IC3 PRINTS

My final major project at university was inspired by signs and symbols. I decided to create an icon subverting the racial police code for black people, IC3. My experimentations included variations including the individual characters ‘I’, ‘C’ and ‘3’ in different arrangements, images of the phonetic sounds of the label like eyes and cultural references like afro picks. I also played with diamond shapes playing on the word 'icy' like the slang word for jewellery also included in the wordplay of rapper Dave's song, Funky Friday.

I completed a number of different designs ranging from more abstract and literal forms of the original icons. I like that the design was becoming literally a code as well because some would need context for the meaning to make sense.
